- Reviews:I’ve adopted 2 pets from UPR in the last year. A lab mix and a little kitten. I’ve had a great experience with unleashed, as well as the fosters for both animals. I haven’t had a female cat before and when I told the front desk that, they offered to let me meet other cats to find the perfect fit for my family. My babies have come to me healthy, loved, and have both turned into amazing pets for my family. I recommend them!By Laura Greb (4 months ago)My latest rescued family member was through Unleashed. She is a sweet little gal who had recently given birth. I had to wait until the pups were adopted and she was spayed. The cost was higher than expected but Ruby is barely two years old. Thing went very smoothly.By Sue (2 months ago)We adopted our precious puppy from Unleashed in October 2023. Our experience was wonderful! We were treated so well and our first meeting with our Rosie was wonderful! The facility was very clean, staff was incredibly friendly and this was an all around great experience! Our kids and some of their friends have also adopted from there and all have told of positive experiences. I would not hesitate to work with them again! Denise and Cecil WysongBy Denise Wysong (3 months ago)I’ve adopted two Siberian huskies from Unleashed in the past three years and they are wonderful dogs. Thankful each day for Aspen and Kody. Sorry to hear that they are having issues at this shelter….my experiences with adopting two Husky puppies from this shelter were nothing but positive.By Kris Dietzen (3 months ago)I know someone who worked there previously. All I can say is that when I told them about all the news of violations/unsanitary conditions and how the shelter was in trouble they were unsurprised. They told me one of the employees who used to work there and was close with the owner was a bulldog breeder- that seems to pretty actively contradict the mission of rescues. They also said that the owner was terrible to employees and the place was really gross and overcrowded. Employee turnover rate was very high. The other thing they said is that the shelter would collect donated items and re-sell them to adopters with a huuuuge markup. They’d take dollar store donation collars and make adopters pay 10x the price for them. Seems like they’re no stranger to sketchy practices. Wonderful that the owner seems to want to rescue so many dogs but being so arrogant that you think you’re above the law/animal welfare regulations is not the way to do that. Just look at the number of disgruntled employees from there- that speaks volumes about how this place is run -that the animal lovers that work there leave in droves.By jared jones (2 months ago)

- Reviews:Having lost our senior cat 2 years ago, we felt it was time to add another cat to our lives. We spent some time looking online at various shelters in the Kansas City area. When I saw the picture of “Sweet Pea” (now known as Simone Jolie Chatte), I was taken by her sweet face and the description of her personality. It took us a couple of weeks to get over to Great Plains SPCA, and to our delight, this darling 3 year old cat was still available. We met her in person and she was just endearing in person as her photo belied. I was impressed by the thoroughness of the adoption process. Carolyn, the adoption person, was very careful in making sure we knew what was expected of us as pet owners, and what behaviors we might expect of the cat as she got accustomed to her new home . We were provided with the kitty’s health history, immunizations, spaying operative report, Rabies shot tag, etc. We were thrilled to be able to take her home that day! She’s been with us not quite a week and has completely stolen our hearts. She is very interested in looking out the windows at the birds and squirrels, but she’s definitely an indoor cat (which is what we wanted). She’s staked out several favorite sleeping spots, and loves playing with her catnip toys. We’re hoping that she will enjoy her kitty climbing and resting platform, but for now she’s getting to know every nook and cranny of our house. We look forward to many years of companionship and love with our sweet Simone! Thank you Great Plains SPCA!By Rebecca Ehrich (3 months ago)THE best experience adopting a dog I’ve ever had. Staff was so kind and explained everything I needed to know. They made the process super easy and super quick! Little “Emoji,” now named Rue, is doing so good!! We’ve already mastered “sit” and are making progress on “lie down!” Now just to master using the bathroom outside ???? We are still unsure about things like trash cans, loud trucks, mirrors, and the wind. But we are learning every day! Thank you guys so much!By Kelsey L (captainfiveous) (a year ago)This place is awesome! Herb was the one who helped us adopt our kitty Elvis, and he was seriously one of the nicest people I’ve ever met. The process was so easy and we got to take home our kitty right away. They take such good care of the animals and I would recommend this place over and over! Thank you Herb and all of the other staff as well!By Cailey Garrett (a month ago)Love this place! Great staff, so much caring of animals and so much love. Visited a few weeks ago and felt so much at home. Thank you for all you do to care for so many animals!By Nancy Benzinger (a year ago)Roughly seven years ago my husband and I found a dog in a friend’s backyard. They said they had called animal control and was getting the runaround due to being in-between Overland park and Shawnee. We were able to coax her with food and take her home with us due to the weather conditions worsening overnight. The next day we took her to Great Plains and they took her in even though she wasn’t our dog because they also couldn’t get ahold of animal control on either end. Long story short, fast forward seven years and we couldn’t be happier with Ariel! She even has a younger sister named Zoei now and both are thriving. We love Great Plains! I even dropped off some new items to their donation bins this past week. I recommend this shelter to anyone looking for a new pet. They have an obvious favorite parent but I try not to take it to heart… ????????????By Chanickqwa Griffin (6 months ago)

The staff are so friendly and knowledgeable. I love all the animals. It’s a pretty quick and easy process. All these animals deserve a loving furever home! Adopt don’t shop! Go check out the animals they have available. They also offer “early bird hold” for strays that come in on hold waiting to see if owner claims. These animals are so sweet!
I love KC Pet Project! I’ve lived in a number of different cities and states and KCPP is one of the best animal service businesses I’ve ever worked with.
This organization is on top of things! It’s extremely clean and organized and the staff at this location they are wonderfully empathetic. It seemed like everyone there was intense on helping pets and people. I was heartbroken having to drop off a wonderful little dog that We had found because we couldn’t keep her. They made me feel confident that she would be well taken care of even going out of their way to tell me how beautiful she was and how quickly they thought she would be adopted. They really had a carrying attitude all the way around and I can’t say enough how much I appreciate that!
I hope that little girl finds a new and wonderful home soon!
The Zona Rosa was not a great experience, but maybe they were having an off day? I hope so.
Adopted my 3-legged friend from kc pet project. It was clear he got the best medical care there and the adoption process was easy and painless. The staff is always friendly and willing to chat!
I can’t praise this place enough. We just adopted a dog from here this week and it was such a positive experience. The staff was SO KNOWLEDGEABLE and PATIENT. We met with a couple dogs and never felt rushed. When they supervised our dog to dog meeting they were extremely vigilant and ensured the safety of our current dogs. I wish I remembered the names of all the staff that helped my GF and I out because they were all amazing! Facilities were very clean and it seems like they really do there best to understand each dog’s behavior and personality before adopting them out.
I giving this one star because I feel as though they are way to quick to euthanize some animals.
As we were out of town my aunt was watching our baby Athena Marie and she happened to have gotten lost. Apparently she ended up at Kcpet on 6/15 long story short my aunt was desperately trying to find her before we got back into town. She happened to have located what she thought was Athena on 6/21 by it was too late. They euthanized my 7 yo baby girl all because they said she was “aggressive”. This is a dog who has never attacked anyone or any other animal EVER.
If anything she was terrified and scared. I hate that I didn get to say goodbye I hate that this happened to my beautiful baby girl. I HONESTLY hope you all reconsider how soon you put dogs down because sometimes there is people searching for their missing pet!!!
