  1. Dandelion was adopted three weeks ago from SD humane society. Convenient experience and healthy cute smart kitten! Good for first time kitten owners. The humane society also give a free bag of dry food, so kittens can continue their meals as from the shelter.

  2. On April 15th, 2017 I stopped by to look for a furry fella to keep me company at home. I was brand new to the area and wanted a companion. An employee (Matthew, I think) was helping me out, checking out some cats. He told me he would introduce me to a very special cat that he usually doesn’t show folks.

I was introduced to Peter, a 5 year old orange tabby who was just as cute as can be. I was told that Peter was a great cat with lots of personality; I didn’t really believe that cats have personality, but I went with it. The story, as I recall, was Peter’s owner had been taken to the hospital but never returned…

Almost 6 years later and this cat is in the top 3 best things that has ever happened to me. He’s been by my side through a rough divorce, new marriage, the loss of other pets, my dads cancer and my 4 years in the Marine Corps. I truly believe that he felt these experiences with me and that he is the best buddy I could’ve asked for. He’s still alive and well, pushing his 11th year. I love this dude and appreciate the San Diego Humane Society for putting us together.

I got another cat a month later. She’s fine. I love her too.

  3. Never have any complaints about this place. The people are so friendly an hapoy to be there. I got my little guy couple months back an tell you the truth he saved me I didn’t save him ❤. I took my dog home an he broke out of his shell in about 5days. He has been a great addition to are family. I plan to volunteer some of my free time to the shelter. They also have free cat food dog food wet food and toys for the people who are needing help. Go and adopt a new family member you’ll love their new addition to the

  4. The staff was very kind and helpful, they all had a lot of experience and tips to offer! I came in today with my boyfriend to adopt hamster Kumquat, who we have been interested in adopting for a week. Not only did the staff kindly help me, but they also helped Kumquat! They gave Kumquat a lot of bedding to go, so he may feel comfortable. I also noticed how relaxed and comfortable Kumquat was around people, hopefully meaning the staff treated him kindly 🙂 They were also very responsible when it came to taking care of the animals; they asked all the right questions regarding animal enclosure, plans for the pet, etc. and they didn’t let me handle Kumquat before adoption, to ensure his safety!! I love how passionate the workers are, it made this adoption experience amazing (it was my first) and I hope one day to adopt more pets like Kumquat 🙂

  5. I went in today wanting to get a dog. After looking through the many dogs they had, I shared with the front desk staff the dogs I was interested in & what I’d need in a pet. She recommended two dogs I didn’t see since they have another location & one I saw that met my needs. I then met with the adoption counselors who helped me narrow down to two & got to meet them both. I instantly knew Biscuit, now named Maui, was the one for me. I’m so happy with my experience & am glad to know her medical history with her vaccines & neutering is done. They even gave me a bag of dog food for her which I really appreciated. I wish I could’ve donated or done more for all that they do!

Genuinely wonderful place to get a pet. The animals are well cared for, the staff is friendly and knowledgeable, the site is spotless. The staff interviewed us thoroughly and spoke with every adult in the household to be sure they were all okay with the adoption. They went to considerable trouble to make sure we and our new pup were a good fit, and that he would be going to a safe and loving home.

Fabulous place to go! You can tell the animals are well-taken care of, and I am so happy with my dog that I adopted from there! She has all of her shots, her microchip, and was spayed. Also, she definitely has some training and I think she might even be potty trained. We all love her- thanks so much to this shelter!!

This place has their stuff together. Very smooth process, and the place is comfortable and accommodating. The animals seem really happy and it is a clean environment. I loved the store inside. The entire experience went really well, and I wish all shelters had the same setup because more people would be adopting from shelters. Lots of puppies/kittens to choose from. We adopted a lab/sheppard mix named Sugar. ???? He seemed to be already potty trained, to sit, and lay down.

We have welcomed 3 animals into our care from HW. Considering the past 2 experiences have gone well, we figured everything would go perfect this time. We adopted Dancer from them on Feb 23, 2023. She is full of life, spunky and a pure joy to be around! She was given an exam on Feb15th, under the care of HW, and tested positive for 2 conditions. She was on a treatment plan until Feb20th. It was RECOMMENDED to bring her to the vet on the 26th for a follow up fecal testing. Her results came back and she tested positive for giardia. Midland Animal Clinic, Poway recommended we contact HW to see if they can issue the prescription for treatment. (Of course we’d pay for it). HW has denied the request because Dancer was not being treated with it under their care. So somehow, during the time Dancer (now known as Sierra) has been quarantined in my house from the evening of the 23rd until the day the stool sample was taken (Feb 26th – 3 DAYS), she caught giardia? Seeing how she was a patient under your (HW) care during the time caught giardia – it was my hope that you could at least do the right thing and offer the treatment plan. Are their pups cute? Absolutely – but I can no longer say, with 100% certainty that Helen Woodward actually cares about the wellbeing of its animals that leaves its doors. Nor can I continue to promote and refer friends to this establishment. If you have recently adopted from Helen Woodward, especially the recent Shepard/Labrador Retriever Blends, please bring your pup in for a fecal exam!!!!!

Liked the approval process. They were careful to insure a good home for our new pet. While we where there a person who didn’t seem to have it all together was denied adoption. Thank you HW for protecting your pets.

Right from the “top shelf” of San Diego things to do. Wether your an exploratory mission to test the idea of bringing new friend to adopt or just visiting, this always leaves me feeling great. Great friendly and helpful staff and volunteers…????????

I have had positive caring personnel when had pets euthanized. 1st my 14yr old cat with advanced cancer, nx yr it was my gravely ill dog. Both times we were treated with such kindness & patience. We were given as much time as we wanted to say goodbye & we took an extended amount We dealt with 3 separate persons. We kept taking turns kissing her to say goodbye & were a crying mess. They were very busy & they were still generous with the amount of time they took. This was 2 yrs ago. I would recommend them

I went there to check a found cat that looked like my Pixie. Unfortunately she was not her. I also received help with information having to do with low income vet care and spay and nueter clinic for low income pet owners in my area where I live. The staff was very helpful with everything. I also walked the dog kennels they were having free adoption of elgible animals at the site Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. IF I could have I would have taken all of them home with me. It is so sad to see so many huskies and pitbulls I wish people would not be so stupid when they see puppies and realized that pets are part of our family and need time, attention, training, vaccinations, spaying or nuetering. Put bulls and huskies can be great family dogs bith are loyal, loving pets and companions but require a lot of time and training the first couple of years of their lives. Huskeys are talkers its just the way they are very social and cannot be just tossed out in the back yard they need to be walked and socialized and taught manners, they look to you the leader of the pack to lead and if you don’t be prepared to be led by them. Huskies are shedders and require daily grooming they have a double coat and it needs to be brushed or it will get painfull mats, and fur everywhere. So please think hard on these things before getting any puppy. And if you can and do have time for a Huskie please try one of the many in shelter and/or rescues, many of them aren’t even two years old but just big enough to be difficult to handle. So sad. The pit bull are lovers and need plenty of love and someone who will put in time to train them and be the leader. Bye for now.
