Mr. Bishop definitely took a very difficult event in my life and made it much, much easier. Very streamlined and at a good cost. Though my first, and hopefully last, bankruptcy I’d say my overall experience couldn’t have been better. Very professional and the appointments took little to no time. He answered any questions I had and was even able to work in things that I forgot at our original appointment. At times I had to text on the weekend, expecting an answer on Monday during business hours but he always responded right away.

Working with Mr. Bishop and his staff was wonderful. Going through this type financial transition was very hard. Especially during a pandemic. They were very understanding, professional and made this process a little easier. Kalley answered all my questions and concerns via email promptly. Mr. Bishop has also worked with my dad in the past. My dad recommended Mr. Bishop because ‘he’s a smart guy and knows his stuff’. Choosing Mr. Bishop was definitely the right choice. I cannot thank him and his staff enough!

Beware! Been looking for a bankruptcy lawyer and saw this place.  Started reading the reviews and couldn’t believe what i was seeing, they are all duplicated from their other pages! And not just one, like all of them!!  I took screenshots and posted them so no one else gets duped.  Im looking for a lawyer with honesty and integrity which is definitely NOT this place!

My husband and I were instantly put at ease when speaking to the attorney during our bankruptcy consultation. Not wanting to jump into anything right away, we were never pressured to make a decision the day of the consultation. Instead, we left the office with all the information we needed broken down for us and all of our questions answered. Because of the attorney’s honesty, transparency and professionalism, we decided to retain him for our bankruptcy a couple weeks later. It was one of the best decisions we ever made. It has been a little over a year since we began the bankruptcy process and it has been a great fresh start for us. During the process, there was ample communication from the office as well as quick responses to any and every question we had along the way. I would highly recommend this office to everyone!!

In the United States, bankruptcy is largely governed by federal law, commonly referred to as the "Bankruptcy Code" ("Code"). The United States Constitution (Article 1, Section 8, Clause 4) authorizes Congress to enact "uniform Laws on the subject of Bankruptcies throughout the United States". Congress has exercised this authority several times since 1801, including through adoption of the Bankruptcy Reform Act of 1978, as amended, codified in Title 11 of the United States Code and the Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act of 2005 (BAPCPA).
Some laws relevant to bankruptcy are found in other parts of the United States Code. For example, bankruptcy crimes are found in Title 18 of the United States Code (Crimes). Tax implications of bankruptcy are found in Title 26 of the United States Code (Internal Revenue Code), and the creation and jurisdiction of bankruptcy courts are found in Title 28 of the United States Code (Judiciary and Judicial procedure).
Bankruptcy cases are filed in United States bankruptcy court (units of the United States District Courts), and federal law governs procedure in bankruptcy cases. However, state laws are often applied to determine how bankruptcy affects the property rights of debtors. For example, laws governing the validity of liens or rules protecting certain property from creditors (known as exemptions), may derive from state law or federal law. Because state law plays a major role in many bankruptcy cases, it is often unwise to generalize some bankruptcy issues across state lines.

Bankruptcy is a daunting situation to face, but fortunately there are alternatives to consider before making such a drastic decision. Here are three popular alternatives to bankruptcy in Sarnia:

  • Debt Consolidation: Debt consolidation involves combining multiple debts into a single loan or payment plan. This allows individuals to manage their debt more effectively by simplifying payments and potentially reducing interest rates. By working with a debt consolidation company or financial institution, individuals can create a feasible repayment plan that fits within their budget.
  • Credit Counseling: Credit counseling involves working with a trained professional to evaluate your financial situation and develop a plan to repay your debts. These professionals can provide guidance on budgeting, debt management, and negotiating with creditors. They can also assist with organizing your finances, offering you tools and resources to educate yourself on money management.
  • Debt Settlement: Debt settlement involves negotiating a settlement with creditors to pay off a portion of your debt, typically for a reduced amount. This is often used when individuals are unable to afford their current debt payments. Debt settlement companies work on behalf of the individual to negotiate lower settlement amounts and affordable repayment plans. However, it’s important to note that debt settlement can have long-term impacts on credit scores and may result in tax consequences.

Before exploring any of these alternatives, it is advisable to consult with a financial advisor or a professional with expertise in debt management. They can provide personalized advice based on your specific financial situation and help you make an informed decision about the best course of action to take in Sarnia.
