  After you sign in at reception you are passed from one care team member to another as they complete a series of tests and assessments in preparation for seeing the doctor. This process took about 35 minutes after which one is escorted to the doctor’s waiting room. The care team members were very efficient, friendly, and helpful. We waited in the doctor’s waiting room for 1 hour and 45 minutes. Finally we were moved to the doctor’s exam room where we were shown a short video and then left to wait another 40 minutes. Our appointment time was 9:00 am and by noon we still had not seen the doctor. I have no idea what causes these interminable wait times. I suspect over-booking, but have no way of knowing other than the observation that many people are waiting throughout the facility. When they book your appointment they tell you to be prepared to be there for 2 to 3 hours, but who would have ever thought that 2 and half hours of that time would be spent waiting! To me this is unconscionable! I was so cranky, stiff from sitting, and hungry after waiting for so long I could barely be civil to the doctor. In the end the result was come back in 6 months, so no real care was given that we can comment on, but their method of operation is highly questionable. Total time spent 3 hours 30 minutes! While this is a beautiful facility with an excellent reputation be prepared to take up residence because they are going to keep you waiting until you want to scream!

  Went here for ICL surgery and had a fantastic experience. The entire Eye Center South team, from doctors, to nurses and receptionists were outstanding. I never had to worry that I wasn’t in the best hands, they took great care of me. If you are in need of eye surgery, go here.

  My eye exam was by Dr Hill. In the 2nd grade I was prescribed thick glasses due to my poor vision. Few yrs back had bilateral cataract surgery. Today Dr Hill did a thorough eye exam. She told me I had 20/20 vision. She did not try to put me in glasses like w other eye doctors I had been. Being a RN I was very satisfied with the care I got & plan to continue using her. Questions were answered. I was not rushed.

  I could not be happier that my cataract surgery was done. I haven’t seen this well in 40 years. Everything is sharp and bright now. Eye Center is excellent. Dr. Sebastian Heersink and staff are the best. I was very pleased with their kindness and professionalism.

  Dr. S. Heersink and his staff were incredible. For my LASIK surgery, the evaluation was thorough and the procedure was great! I had every question answered. They never rushed me and walked me through every phrase. Should have done this years ago.

  Awful experience! Tried to make an appointment, but the person on the phone just hung up on me and then did not answer the phone any longer. I then turned off my caller ID and she answered immediately, to then hang up on me again. I just wanted to make an appointment and I am still speechless this happened.

  I had a lens replacement in my right eye Sept of 2019 & I have to say, it changed my life! It was one of the best things I’ve ever done for myself!!!! My vision had gotten so bad, sometimes I couldn’t even read small print with readers on. I rarely ever need them now, but if I use them, I can read what I’m looking at.   My vision is now awesome!!!   I am a 66 year old male who wore glasses or contacts for 61 years. In 2018 I was diagnosed with cataracts by Dr Dobbs, but I had to wait til the appropriate time to have them removed. I was very concerned about them being removed because I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to pay what the insurance didn’t cover. Dr Dobbs had advised me that there were surgical implants that would correct my vision, that could be implanted when the cataracts were removed. I was hesitant because of the cost of these lens were pretty high. In 2020 my eyes were so bad that the surgery had to be performed. Dr Dobbs referred me to Dr Sebastian Heersink at Eye Center South in Dothan, AL. In November of 2020 I went in for a consultation at Eye Center South. My last stop on my visit that day was at Dr Heersink’s office. Dr Heersink advised me that he could remove the cataracts and put implants in my eyes that would almost completely correct my vision. He also told me that the approximate cost for this was around $2500 per eye. I told him that I could not afford that particular lens and would have to get the cheaper lens that would only partially correct my vision. Dr Heersink told me that they had a research program available that would pay for the cost of the lens if my eyes qualified. Needless to say my anxiety raised during the time the testing for the lens was going on. During the last few weeks of December 2020 Dr Sebastian performed two operations and implanted the $2500 lens into my eyes. For the first time in my life my vision was almost perfect without contact lens or glasses. I cried. I thank God, Eye Center South, Dr Sebastian, and modern technology for my vision. I will be forever grateful to Dr. Heersink and his staff.

Dr. Sugg even took his personal time to look into my sons problems further to be sure we received the right treatment. Just today he treated my dad for an emergency and took care of of him as if he were his own father. I am blessed to have him as my doctor, as well the doctor for my family.   We have used Dr. Sugg since my children were both 3 years old. We eventually transferred our entire family over so he cares for all of our needs. We get our yearly exams and contacts from his office. I was also able to quickly get a new pair of glasses made when I lost mine just before we were traveling out of the country. They have been so friendly and accommodating even with difficult requests. Both of my boys always felt completely comfortable during their exams and actually love going there. The office is quaint and homey so not intimidating to children at all. I would highly recommend Dr. Sugg if you are looking for an ophthalmologist that can serve your entire family’s needs in a very personal and professional setting.

  I don’t normally take time to do reviews but extraordinary service deserves mention. Dr. Sugg and his staff go out of their way to accommodate and take care of my families needs. Professionally, he is incredibly knowledgeable and really takes time to engage each patient. His staff is friendly and makes the paperwork stuff uneventful. Overall, they really care that people are taken care of. In today’s world that is infinitely important and appreciated.

  Long review, here’s the Cliff’s Notes takeaway:

  Doctor is wonderful and thorough, his office staff are rude and incompetent. If you have Tricare reconsider using this facility. The jury is still out as to whether or not they figured out how to process my child’s insurance claim.

  First, Dr. Sugg was phenomenal. He and his assistant were wonderful, respectful, and thorough in their examination of my toddler. I felt engaged and all my questions were answered and things were sufficiently explained to me.

  The reason for my three star review is his office staff which I found to be rude, unprofessional, and incompetent in regards to job related skills. Had it not been for the wonderful experience I had with Dr. Sugg himself this would have undoubtedly been a one star review.

  Neither the office receptionist (rude on the phone and in person) or the alleged “insurance girl” (not rude but also not well-versed in dealing with Tricare insurance) could figure out how to process Tricare insurance using the sponsor’s SSN. Neither my child nor I are eligible for a military ID and this has never been an issues with any civilian doctor he has seen (primary care, other specialists, and an extended hospital stay– never an issue). I always provide the sponsor’s social and my son’s info.

  I’m less concerned that they were unable to do this, there’s a first time for everything I guess, but more concerned with the attitude I received from the receptionist and how they felt it was appropriate to discuss this matter in earshot of an occupied waiting room. And to make matters worse, the “insurance girl” felt it appropriate to come discuss it with me in the waiting room further. When I again explained I don’t have a military ID she responded with “so, you forgot yours?” She finished with saying they’d never “seen this before” and that they’ll “figure it out.” I’m surprised by this considering Ft. Rucker is 20 miles away and this is the only ophthalmologist outside of Birmingham that my son’s PC could find who accepts pediatric patients.

  The whole encounter was rude, unprofessional, and demonstrated a clear lack of competency. I will find out in a few weeks (via a bill) if they indeed “figured it out.” It’s very unfortunate considering the wonderful experience we had with the doctor himself.

  I had not been to a Doctor in 30 years to get my eyes examined so I was a bit apprehensive to make/keep an appointment. But, Dr. Gannon and his wonderful staff made me feel comfortable and performed a thorough eye exam as a New Patient in an hour.
