  1. I’m just getting started in the martial arts world and I couldn’t think of a better place to be. When I first stepped in the academy I was a little nervous, but as soon as I met Derrick and Megan and the other guys and girls training they all welcomed me with open arms and were the nicest people ever and were very supportive. I immediately felt at home. Even the gym dog Rocky came and greeted me haha. I have the utmost respect for Derrick, the other instructors and fellow students. I truly appreciate being a part of this great family!

    Can’t say enough good things about this gym!! The amount of time and effort the coaches and staff put into their students is incredible but what’s even better is the consistency and commitment they have to ensuring their growth and leveling up their knowledge.

    Not to mention, the atmosphere at The Next Element Academy is unmatched, all walks of life are welcomed and there is truly a place for everyone no matter what stage of life you’re in. Finding a gym is easy, but finding a clean gym you can trust and be and feel 100% yourself is priceless.

    While I could go on and on about how amazing everyone and this gym is, nothing beats seeing it for yourself and truly experiencing it in person.

    I’m super appreciative to be apart of this family and am thankful that DK opened up The Next Element Academy because I couldn’t see myself training anywhere else.

  3. I’ve visited several gyms in the southeast and they thankfully they have all been welcoming and clean. With that said, DK has something special at The Next Element. The community is family, the mats are perfect, and lounge is inviting, the location is second to none. I’ve trained here for two years and will always call it home.

  4. This Place is as good as you can get when looking for a mixed martial arts gym. I’ve been going here for a few weeks now and the second I walked in for the first time, I knew this was gonna be a second home for me. DK is a great martial artist, great instructor, and just a great person. He’s created a gym that is comparable to no other. The cleanliness, talent, and welcoming vibe, tells you everything you need to know about this place. Looking forward to spending a lot more of my time here. Highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a gym in MB Area. Wether you are looking to fight competitively , train to stay in shape, or learn how to defend yourself, this is the place for you.

  5. My son and I have been attending Next Level Academy for jiu jitsu and we are thoroughly enjoying our experience. The mini roller class for my 6-8 year old son is perfect for his age and he loves every minute of it. I, on the other hand, enjoy attending the adult classes and learning from the knowledgeable instructors. Before every class, my son and I like to play chess while we wait and it’s a great bonding experience for us. The academy has a great community atmosphere and I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in learning jiu jitsu or improving their skills. #NextLevelAcademy #JiuJitsu #ChessAndJitsu

    My 10-yr-old son did two drop-in no-gi classes while we were visiting Myrtle Beach. He was welcomed by Professor Leo and the other students, learned some new techniques, including a new sweep, and had a LOT of fun. He wants to return to Myrtle Beach just to do more classes here. Now that says a lot. GREAT instruction and environment. Highly, highly recommend.

    Great group of students and great instruction. I dropped in for 2 days and learned a different style but extremely effective. The name of the school is unique and symbolic of their efforts. The students are extremely humble as well as the professor. He is a master of his craft and provides meticulous detail in his instructions. Ooos. Semper Fi.

    I had been looking to try BJJ for a while. I looked at the websites of some of the gyms in the area and was immediately drawn to Checkmat. Seeing videos of Master Leo competing at the highest levels showed me he was the real deal. Since my first class he has made me feel welcome. The training partners there are great and always willing to help out where they can. It has become a second home for me and I love going to class and open mat. I have recently signed up my son for lessons and he loves it. Master Leo and Christy are fantastic with the kids and the kids love them. I would never have imagined competing in BJJ but with all of the support and encouragement I have received, I gave it a shot. It was the second best BJJ decision I made after joining this gym! Thank you Master Leo for all of your work and knowledge.

    These guys are great. The combined experience of the instructors here is astounding. They have competed in both national as well as international tournaments, and are willing to share that knowledge with their students. It is a very hands on and easy to learn concept. My son loves it here, and has trained with other great trainers. I recommend them to everyone who has a true desir

    I trained with Alex for nearly a decade through various iterations of being a group of guys who were knowledge sharing, to being a fight club, to merging with a BJJ school and having a full roster of MMA, BJJ, Judo and kickboxing. The man really knows a lot and is a fantastic teacher. He’s been a great friend, corner man and coach as well. You absolutely can’t go wrong if you’re learning from Alex. I’ve know Ray for a shorter period of time, but in that time I’ve come to greatly respect his Judo knowledge and ability. He’s also a wonderful teacher and will help you take your game to the next level. I can’t possibly overstate how competent and friendly both Ray and Alex are. If you’re even remotely close to Myrtle Beach I can’t imagine why you would want to train anywhere else.

    I am fortunate to have received outstanding training from Alex and Ray. I have been in Law Enforcement for twenty years and Alex has given me the best defensive tactics training anyone could ask for. I can honestly say that you will not be disappointed with these two instructors.     Alex and Ray are the utmost best. Their ways of teaching and skill levels are truly unparalleled. I never knew there were so many ways to hurt someone in order to defend yourself. Great place for beginners and “experts”, and a it’s filled with a wonderful group of people who don’t judge or discriminate. MYRTLE BEACH BJJ, ALL DAY!
