Horrible experience. My lawyer was Kimberly Paynter and I am so glad I just now sent an email stating that I no longer want her services. I’m also glad that I didn’t spend any more time or money other than the initial retainer fee at this firm, otherwise I would be in a far worse situation than I’m already in.This process has been a complete waste of my time and money that I had to borrow as I’m barely able to afford anything now as a result of my ex taking absolutely everything. Even though I have proof of theft in massive $$$ amounts that my ex stole from me and have more than enough sufficient evidence to prove all of this. I can’t speak for the other Russel Alexander locations as there are a few, but I would never recommend this law firm located in Whitby (Brooklin area) to anyone. I feel like they just get their “good name” and “good reputation” only because of the many locations they have, but my experience has been absolutely horrible and I’m just so happy I didn’t take out more unnecessary loans to pay for expensive legal fees for a lawyer who has no intention of actually helping me. Separations from common law partners (like in my case) and divorce is hard enough already ESPECIALLY when there are children involved, but when the lawyer you are paying for to defend and HELP you does not have your best interest at heart just makes everything so much worse. To top all of this off she was also very unprofessional overall. This whole experience just made me feel like I was and am still getting salt thrown on an already deep wound. I really could have used the funds I paid for a different lawyer at a different family law firm that at the very least would have wanted to help me, their client that they accepted to take on. I usually never write bad reviews (you can see from all the positive reviews I leave to show my gratitude and support for deserving businesses), but I am writing this negative review in hopes that it will help anyone who is currently shopping around for a good family law firm from choosing this one and making the same mistake I did. If I could have left zero stars I absolutely would have. I feel like even one star is being too generous.

I wish I could click for 6 stars! Margie is the best family lawyer I have ever dealt with. She is kind, non-judgemental and actually does what she says she will do. Prompt return of calls/emails, efficient and extremely knowledgeable. I have used her twice and wouldn’t hesitate to use her services again. I would recommend her to any of my friends, family or Financial Planning clients of mine.

What an absolute nightmare. My lawyer was Brittany Whalen, and dealing with this law firm was an awful experience from start to finish in an attempt to create a separation agreement. Some specific examples include: 1. Questions going unanswered. I sent multiple emails asking for the date to have my home appraised for. I never received an answer and picked a date. Later my lawyer told me this was the wrong date. 2. Constant errors. I sent multiple emails regarding missing debts and errors, with no response. One error even added an extra 0 to a total, increasing it tenfold! 3. Banks were holding an interest rate for me until a certain date. Non stop delays and vacations resulted in me losing this interest rate. At one point, my lawyer said she would send an important email, and a full month went by before she remembered to do so. 4. Excessive billing that could have been reduced if questions were properly answered. I was also told in my intake call that the initial retainer would ‘probably cover everything’. I have now spent 3-4x that, and have had to fire my lawyer as we were getting nowhere. 5. No explanation of the process or plan to proceed. Advice consisted of asking what I would like to do next, with little to no advice on how to proceed. Instead of coming up with solutions to wrap things up, it was an endless back-and-forth about non issues. I wish I could have gone with another lawyer from the beginning, but unfortunately was so distressed I didn’t see the warning signs with this firm. I wish I could file a complaint with the Law Society of Ontario, but I am already so worn out and distressed that I just can’t deal with more trouble.

I had the pleasure of working with Nicole Harrison over the last two years. Nicole is a very compassionate individual, always going beyond to assist. One thing I admire about her is her leadership qualities and her ability to complete any given task promptly, allowing you that piece of mind that the job is done. Nicole is a great team player and will make an excellent employee. All the best, my dear. It was a pleasure getting to know you. Keep up the superb work ethic.

I hired Brittany Whalen to represent me through a daunting family separation. I was unaware on the important factors to look for while hiring a lawyer but was quickly enlightened. After hiring Brittany (it was a 50/50 custody battle) I began to notice that this firm was financially driven. She would state that she could not speak to me unless I paid another retainer. I was paying $2500 & $5000 retainers frequently and only hired Ms. Whalen for the course of two months. She also charged for every single e-mail sent to her, even if it was a small question that required a one word reply.

Within these two months she did absolutely nothing for me – not even something as little as filing a motion to receive child support when requested. I was on maternity leave at the time and had no source of income, Brittany did not care.

I had ONE case conference with her – in which she did not file the correct paperwork, was misinformed and highly unprepared. She was very cold during the process and was certainly not listening ears.

After the case conference she told me that I had to settle for a 50/50 agreement although that was not what I wanted due to extreme safety concerns. It was a very emotional process, all in which at the end of the conference told me that I had to pay her more money if I wanted her to keep replying to my e-mails. She even stated “well he is only aggressive and abuse towards you, not the baby” in which is form of victim shaming.

After this – I hired a new lawyer within a new firm. Since then; I have won over 3 motions (one being a 50/50 custody agreement that I did NOT have to agree to) received a lump sum of money from spousal support in which I was entitled to as well as finances from our family home AND child support.

I do not recommend hiring Brittany unless you do not want a fair chance for your custody / financial battles. I paid more for Brittany in two months (20k) than with my new lawyer who I have had for one year and has since settled my case with everything that worked in my favour.

Do yourself a favour and go elsewhere; and if you choose this firm – do NOT hire Brittany.

I had the pleasure of working with associate lawyer Susanna and court clerk Courtney. Both ladies were amazing to work with, they were prompt with responses and quick to get things done. I had hired them under a limited scope practice and they were able to help me along every step of my court process and gave me the confidence I needed to proceed in representing myself in court! I would most definitely recommend these ladies and the firm they work for to anyone dealing with a family matter!!

Susanna Crichlow conducted her self with impressive accuracy and professionalism at my first court hearing. To say I was impressed is an understatement. The opposition tried to undermine Ms. Crichlow experience and knowledge of being newly added to my file and failed miserably at doing so.

I have the upmost respect and trust I’m being represented by one of the best!

    Thank you

Booking a consultation with the intake team was easy and straight forward. Communication was quick and I was able to obtain a consultation very quickly with Susanna Crichlow.

Before the call had even happened I was impressed with the forms and information that was requested before the call. I was very happy to learn that Susanna took the time prior to the call to read over them. It automatically made me feel like my matter was important.

The call was extremely helpful, Susanna is a very compassionate listener and person. She made me feel heard and supported even though this was just a consultation. My family law matter has been very overwhelming and Susanna definitely helped to put some of my anxiety at easy.

I strongly recommend booking a consultation with this firm and Susanna in particular if you have any family law questions and are searching for a lawyer.

Top Family Lawyer Alternatives in Oshawa

The Biggest Family Lawyer in Canada

Oshawa, located in Ontario, Canada, is home to several highly reputable family lawyers who are experts in dealing with various family law issues. In addition to their expertise, there are also alternative options available for individuals who may prefer a different approach or require specialized services. Here are three top family lawyer alternatives that are very popular in Oshawa:

  • Mediation Services: Mediation services offer a cooperative approach to resolve family law issues. A mediator, who is usually a neutral third party, helps facilitate communication and negotiation between parties involved in a dispute. Mediation is a cost-effective and time-efficient alternative to litigation, allowing parties to come up with mutually beneficial solutions rather than relying on a judge’s decision. Mediation can be particularly useful for parents seeking a fair child custody arrangement or couples looking to settle a divorce. It encourages peaceful resolution while minimizing the emotional and financial stress often associated with court proceedings.
  • Collaborative Law: Collaborative law is another alternative option gaining popularity in Oshawa. This approach allows parties to work together with a team of professionals, including lawyers, financial advisors, and mental health experts, to find creative solutions that meet everyone’s needs. Unlike traditional litigation, collaborative law prioritizes open communication and problem-solving, helping to preserve relationships and reduce conflict. This approach is particularly beneficial when dealing with complex issues such as high net worth divorces, spousal support, or property division. It fosters an atmosphere of respect and cooperation between the parties involved.
  • Online Legal Services: With advancements in technology, online legal services have become an increasingly popular alternative for individuals seeking cost-effective solutions for their family law matters in Oshawa. Online legal services platforms offer access to a wide range of legal resources, including legal document templates, expert advice, and guidance specific to family law issues. These platforms often provide personalized support and assistance, allowing individuals to navigate the legal process with ease. Online legal services are especially suitable for those looking for convenience and affordability, as they can be accessed from the comfort of one’s home at any time.

While traditional family lawyers in Oshawa offer valuable expertise and representation, alternative options such as mediation, collaborative law, and online legal services can provide efficient and cost-effective alternatives for individuals seeking assistance with their family law matters.
