What People Are Saying: 5 Customer Reviews

  1. I started training at Burke’s Martial Arts a few years ago. I was blown away by the introductory lesson and quickly joined as a member. This place teaches extremely practical self-defense. The instructors are skilled and professional. There is a sense of community among the practitioners. There is a seriousness about the training, but it’s also incredibly fun. The school is packed with students who are amazing to work with. I could go on… The only reason I had to leave was because of my work schedule. I’d still be practicing today if I had the time. When I called up to explain my new work situation and cancel my contract, the staff was immediately understanding. The conversation only lasted a few minutes and the cancellation was taken care of. I highly recommend this place.

  2. When I walked in 5 years ago, at 110 pounds, I didn’t think of myself as particularly strong or powerful but now I do and that’s thanks to Burke’s Martial Arts. Burke’s Martial arts is a great place to learn precise technique and how to grow as a person. In terms of technique Mr. Burke, the owner and head teacher, expertly breaks down every aspect of every movement, from the position of your toes to the angle of your hips to where your eyes are looking. Any other Muay Thai teacher I’ve met always compliments me on my clean technique and that’s all thanks to Mr. Burke. Additionally, Mr. Burke will often invite world famous professional Thai fighters to guest teach for a few months out of the year, which I think provides unbelievable value whether you are looking just to learn or to fight. Regarding personal growth, Mr. Burke infuses the growth mindset into his teaching style and always reminds us that self improvement is a virtue and to celebrate ourselves for it.

  3. I became a student at this gym a few years back and had to cancel after a couple of months due to upcoming health/financial reasons. Had no issues cancelling. They do have a $200 cancellation fee but it is waived if you attend 8 more classes, which I did.

I ended up joining again about a year later, but did not enjoy it. This was before they moved to their current bigger location, and the previous gym was small. The classes were getting crowded and we had to constantly share bags, it was unbearably hot and just overall very uncomfortable, so again I cancelled. Once again, no issues with my cancellation, although I did lose out $200 because I did not attend the 8 more classes, it was just too intolerable for me.

I joined for a third time a year ago, in the midst of COVID, and managed to stick with it for the entire year. It was nice being able to workout without a mask on (optional). The classes are tough and I did lose a lot of the weight I wanted to lose while also learning better form. The instructors were also encouraging and really push you to your limit while at the same time allowing you to take it at your own pace.

This time I managed to run the entirety of the one year contract, but will be moving so will not be renewing. Kickboxing is an awesome sport though and I’ll definitely be taking it up again. Totally recommend.

  4. Burke’s Martial Arts offers authentic and high quality Muay Thai classes with tentative instructors. You see yourself grow and get better and I cant recommend these classes enough.

  5. I have been going to Burkes for about a month now. I went in expecting to increase my fitness and learn life skills/structure that I can use in the world outside of the gym. I have yet to be disappointed. Everyone is accepting, respectful, and helpful to anyone who wants to join. I don’t see myself leaving this gym any time soon.

Came to visit for a couple classes recently. Excellent quality of people training there. Had the pleasure of witnessing the head coach not only teaching jiujitsu but giving upper belts teaching experience. Everyone made me feel welcome and I learned a great deal just from a couple days training there. Great experience. Thanks!

Best BJJ school in RI! Tim is an awesome instructor, a very intelligent teacher. The school is spacious and clean. It offers classes in the mornings afternoons and nights which is also very great for fitting into your schedule. If your around the area do not hesitate to stop by and try a class for yourself.

This school came highly recommended to me by many people and within minutes of arriving I knew there was no other place to learn BJJ. All the great things you’ve heard about this place are not exaggerated it is that high level, positive, clean and most of all fun. I can not say enough good things about Tim, Jimmy, the space and every person that trains there.

I’m a newbie at BJJ (less than 4 months) and wanted to drop in to a class while visiting Providence for business. Mat was super welcoming and friendly from the start and so was everyone else I interacted with. It’s a great gym atmosphere and culture and I learned a ton of practical tips in the 1.5 hour class and drilling. These guys are awesome and are definitely worth checking out!

My rating is based more off a relationship gone poorly with the owner than the place itself. Me and my husband took my two boys here for awhile (6 and 9 years). Coach George was great. Unfortunately the Owner Mat who will probably like to tell you on repeated occasions he is terrible with business. That information came to the surface very quickly. Due to a 30 notice I was unaware of I was going to have to pay for one of my sons to keep attending that I knew would not be able to go that month. Fine, I understand I will pay the 30 days out of understanding and I didn’t want to be rude to a place that my children frequent. The owner told me my account would be put on hold the end of the month and I agreed. A lot of the children seem to be scarcely going during the summertime anyways so I’ve been hearing from other parents. Beginning of next month rolls around and I’m charged again for one of my children. I call to sort it out but don’t think about leaving a message because voicemail box will always be full. I then proceed to the website and write and email as well as a text message to that number. I end up on the phone with Mat the owner thinking it would be a quit fix and honest misunderstanding. He really wanted that $90, meant more to him than a good relationship going forward or any continued business for that matter. Keep in mind I had already paid for one month prior of my son not going and he has no problem taking a whole new month from me. All in all I’m scared this gentleman has my card information and really needs to get his paperwork in order. I never heard of a business being so much “he said, she said”. Again, coach George was great. None of the other instructors I ever got to know too much because he handled a lot of the kids classes. *If classes happen to be smaller that day they will shorten an hour class to a half hour class for some reason. *North Attleboro location, make sure to call first because again if not enough people show class won’t happen unless you call and say you will be present. (I guess text because if they don’t pick up voicemail box is full).

My 4 1/2 year old son attended his first class with Mat and was totally shy and didn’t want to participate, Mat was very understanding and had a no pressure attitude towards my son, by the end of class he was hands on and fell in love with the coaches and the whole experience. Thank you to Mat and his staff! The next 4 years will be great here and look forward to our son becoming part of Team Santos
