As of 2023, Costco is the third-largest retailer in the world and is the world's largest retailer of choice and prime beef, organic foods, rotisserie chicken, and wine as of 2016. Costco is ranked #11 on the Fortune 500 rankings of the largest United States corporations by total revenue.Costco's worldwide headquarters are in Issaquah, Washington, an eastern suburb of Seattle, although its Kirkland Signature house label bears the name of its former location in Kirkland. The company opened its first warehouse (the chain's term for its retail outlets) in Seattle in 1983. Through mergers, however, Costco's corporate history dates back to 1976, when its former competitor Price Club was founded in San Diego, California. As of November 2023, Costco has 871 warehouses worldwide: 600 in the United States, 108 in Canada, 40 in Mexico, 33 in Japan, 29 in the United Kingdom, 18 in South Korea, 15 in Australia, 14 in Taiwan, six in China, four in Spain, two in France, and one each in Iceland, New Zealand, and Sweden.

While Costco is a popular wholesale warehouse chain in the United States, there are several alternatives that offer similar benefits and affordability. Here are three top Costco alternatives that are highly popular in the country:

  • Sam’s Club: Sam’s Club is the closest competitor to Costco in terms of size and offerings. It is a membership-only retail warehouse club that provides bulk items at affordable prices. The club offers a wide range of products, including groceries, electronics, furniture, and household items. Just like Costco, Sam’s Club also includes additional services, such as optical, pharmacy, and tire center. Although Sam’s Club has fewer locations compared to Costco, it compensates with excellent customer service and competitive pricing.
  • B.J.’s Wholesale Club: B.J.’s Wholesale Club is another popular alternative to Costco. This membership-based warehouse club operates primarily on the East Coast of the United States and offers a diverse range of products at competitive prices. B.J.’s Wholesale Club provides similar benefits to Costco, including bulk purchasing options, exclusive discounts, and services like gas stations and optical centers. They also have a digital coupon program that offers additional savings to members.
  • Boxed: Boxed is a digital wholesale retailer that offers an alternative to traditional warehouse clubs like Costco. Unlike the others, Boxed is an online-based retailer, which means there are no physical locations to visit. Boxed offers a wide variety of products, from food and household items to electronics. It also offers discounted bulk prices and delivers straight to customers’ doorsteps. Boxed is ideal for individuals who prefer the convenience of online shopping and want to avoid the hassle of visiting a physical store.

What People Are Saying: 5 Customer Reviews

  1. Visited for the first time in over a decade. Parking lot was packed, but some spaces could be found a distance away from the building. Great selection of necessities and fresh baked goods. Carts are huge and it takes a bit of careful navigating not to bump others… Self checkout is quick and easy.

  2. Wonderful place to shop. Super friendly employees. Lines move fast. Better pricing when shopping in the store instead of buying on line. Some items are in store only like 4 LED light bulbs for $10 and the dog food is about $20 less for the chicken adult kibble than delivered. Diamonds are way less than local jewelry stores and the tennis bracelets are exquisite. Lactaid is about 25% less in store. Plenty of parking and New car parking available . Highly recommended.

  3. People love Costco, PERIOD👍👍👍

And I’m no different, especially with gas prices pushing $6 here in the Bay Area. In addition to making regular gas fill-ups every two weeks or so, I love to drop in weekly to get my ready to eat dinner ideas, from $4.99 rotisserie chicken, to bottled water, to chicken nuggets & Chinese dumplings, as a bachelor living alone, it just makes things so easy for me.

This is THE best Costco because it’s got the best location, right in the heart of Sunnyvale next to a CalTrain station. Things are well organized, I always know where to get my fills of desired items. I also love the EXTERNAL food court (vs interior ones at the Santa Clara or Mountain View locations), I can drive by after gas fill-up to get a $1.50 Hot Dog & Soda combo, or a slice of pizza, it’s so convenient!

  4. Sunnyvale Costco has most of the products you need but the parking lot is always so full. It would take you at least 20min to find a spot on Fridays, Saturdays or Sundays.
