What People Are Saying: 5 Customer Reviews

  1. Love this part of beach. Fishing is great. Scenery is beautiful and the people are very friendly. The sand is very soft so be prepared aka have at least an all terrain tire if you don’t have any they have great parking spots before you go onto the beach.

  2. When I was working in Wharton,TX last summer. I was able to make a drive down to Matagorda beach for the first time ever. It’s so peaceful and beautiful. The Colorado river runs parallel with the road down to the water. You can see all the fishing boats, which is really something.

  3. The only reason it doesn’t get a 5 star rating is the boggy sand. Take your 4 wheel drive vehicle for sure, and have a tow rope or a winch… I see people stuck every trip. Water can be very clear and clean here, not much “Texas Tea” found naturally washing up as on Surfside or Galveston. Tons of great fishing all around this area. You will need a one time per year Beach Permit you can grab for $10 per vehicle at the local convenience stores (just put the sticker right above your registration sticker on the driver side). Be sure to only leave your footprints behind!!

  4. Hidden gem. The beach is clean, not crowded. Beach facilities are pretty good and there are pretty nice camping grounds near by.

  5. We love going to Matagorda Beach. The surfs are always big and lots of sea shells. We love parking right there on the beach/water and popping up our tent. The sand is a little rough to drive through sometimes but with 4 wheel drive we had no problems.

How to Beachcomb with Your Family

Here are some tips for families beachcombing:

  1. Go at low tide. This is when the most beach is exposed and you’re more likely to find interesting things.
  2. Wear comfortable shoes. You’ll be doing a lot of walking, so make sure your feet are comfortable.
  3. Bring a bag or bucket to collect your finds. You can also bring a magnifying glass to get a closer look at things.
  4. Be on the lookout for seashells, seaweed, driftwood, and other marine life. You may also find sea glass, coins, and other interesting objects.
  5. Teach your children about the different things they find. This is a great way to learn about the marine environment.
  6. Make it a game. See who can find the most seashells or the biggest piece of driftwood.
  7. Be respectful of the environment. Leave no trace and don’t collect anything that is alive.
  8. Have fun! Beachcombing is a great way to spend time with your family and explore the natural world.

Here are some additional tips for families beachcombing with young children:

  • Choose a beach that is safe for children. Look for a beach with shallow water and soft sand.
  • Bring plenty of snacks and drinks. Beachcombing can be tiring, so make sure your children are well-fed and hydrated.
  • Bring a change of clothes. Children are likely to get sandy and wet, so be prepared to change them when you’re done.
  • Take breaks often. Beachcombing can be a lot of fun, but it can also be tiring for young children. Take breaks often to rest and play.
  • Be patient. It may take some time for children to find interesting things. Encourage them to keep looking and be patient.

Beachcombing is a great way for families to have fun and learn about the natural world. By following these tips, you can make your beachcombing experience safe and enjoyable for everyone.

The beach is absolutely gorgeous. I was a little worried coming here on vacation from Kansas cause of some of the info I have seen about the beach and island. Saying it’s horrible basically….. No it’s not! It’s so pretty and laid back here. In my opinion for the price and the small town feel, it’s worth coming here over a crazy expensive packed beach town. (Also there are very few tourist here, so its not like many other beach towns I have been to. Where everyone is on top of each other, and getting mad) is the water crystal clear… No, but it’s not nasty or anything.

This beach in Galveston is a fantastic destination for families looking to have fun and relax in Texas. This beach has everything you need for an enjoyable day out, including soft sand, clear water, and plenty of space to spread out and relax. The beach is family-friendly and offers a variety of activities such as volleyball, sandcastle building, and beachcombing.

There are plenty of restaurants and bars nearby, so you can grab a bite to eat or a refreshing drink. Additionally, the beach offers a variety of water sports such as jet skiing, parasailing, and paddle boarding.

Overall, the beach in Galveston is a great choice for families looking to spend a day in the sun, relax, and have fun. The beach has something for everyone, and the beautiful scenery and laid-back atmosphere make it the perfect destination for a family vacation.

We had a good time at Surfside. We were here during the week in the end of June. It’s super hot but once you get down to the beach if you put up shade and play in the water it’s fine. Warm water, super nice fine sand. Good waves for body surfing, boogey boarding etc. If you drive a car in the beach it’s easy to get stuck. Don’t give it too much gas or you will dig yourself in a whole. We had some of our group drive and some of us walked from the air bnb. It was a lot of fun. We had a group of 24 that spent 3 whole days in the beach. My young daughter got stung 2 times by a jelly fish (really bad luck). Only one other person got stung during that time. If you don’t have meds or a warm shower to treat it (like a nearby air bnb) it could be problematic. Not sure if there are always so many jellies or not.

Located an hour away from Houston, Surfside beach is a perfect gateaway for beach goers and for people who does fishing and Surfing.

Surfside beach is clean and well maintained with plenty of trash cans along, and portable toilet. On summertime it does get full and packed with people enjoying its coarse white sandy beach.

The beach is also a great place to view and witness birds especially on bird migration time in Spring and Fall season.

All in all, I always enjoyed Surfside beach no matter what time of season it is!

We had fun! I wish we had been able to spend more time there exploring. We were able to buy ice at the convenience store which is just a block from the beach. It was very windy so we did not put up the canopy we took, but we saw other people who had used weights to hold theirs down. A nice man told us about the rip tide, so we were careful about where we swam and how far out the kids were. I always over-pack, lol. We took a wagon and could have gotten away with just taking the wagon with a cooler for drinks, a bag for towels and 3 cans of sunscreen for 4 of us, sand toys, and a few chairs. We were only there for a few hours.

Perfect beach for kids, shallow water, plenty of space on a Saturday. We found several types of crabs and a dead sting ray. Water was clear and so so fun for the kids to explore. Very peaceful.

Update: We went again on a Saturday, the perfect amount of people enjoying the beach. We did spot several jellies, including a Stinging Nettle that stung a child in our group. They were over the pain within a few minutes. Just be mindful and reapply that subscreen!

Bathrooms are yuck. Water is shallow pretty far out so good for swimming. Not so much for fishing. End of pier is maybe 4′ deep. Saw a dolphin close in and caught a couple pin fish, but mostly just fed my bait to crabs it seemed.

Had a pleasant day at the beach. Water is very shallow and warm but it does have soft sand. Access to the beach required a good bit of walking and wasn’t very easy.
