Thrifty Traveler’s Guide: Exploring Texas on a Budget
Traveling to Texas on a budget is possible with some careful planning and smart choices. Here are some tips to help you stay on a budget while traveling to Texas:
- Flexible Travel Dates: If possible, be flexible with your travel dates. Airfare and accommodation prices can vary significantly depending on the time of year and day of the week.
- Affordable Accommodation: Look for budget-friendly accommodation options such as hostels, motels, or budget hotels. Consider staying in less touristy areas or suburbs, where prices tend to be lower.
- Public Transportation: Utilize public transportation or rideshare services instead of renting a car. Many Texas cities have efficient public transit systems that can save you money on transportation costs.
- Free and Low-Cost Attractions: Texas offers numerous free and low-cost attractions, such as parks, museums with free admission days, hiking trails, and city tours. Take advantage of these to explore the state without breaking the bank.
- Local Eateries: Skip expensive restaurants and opt for local eateries, food trucks, or markets that offer affordable and delicious meals. Trying local cuisine can be a fun and budget-friendly way to experience Texas culture.
- Pack Snacks and Water: Carry snacks and refillable water bottles to avoid overpriced food and drinks at tourist spots.
- Discounts and Coupons: Look for discounts and coupons on attractions, activities, and restaurants. Many websites and apps offer deals for travelers.
- Free Events and Festivals: Check out local event listings for free festivals, concerts, and cultural events happening during your visit.
- Budget Airlines: If you’re flying to Texas, consider budget airlines that offer lower fares. Just be mindful of extra fees for baggage and other add-ons.
- Group Discounts: If you’re traveling with friends or family, inquire about group discounts for attractions and activities.
- Stay with Friends or Family: If you have friends or family in Texas, consider staying with them to save on accommodation costs.
- Avoid Peak Tourist Season: Traveling during the off-peak season can lead to lower prices for accommodation and activities.
- Cook Your Own Meals: If you have access to a kitchen, consider preparing some of your meals, which can be more cost-effective than eating out for every meal.
By implementing these budget travel tips, you can enjoy your trip to Texas without overspending and make the most of your time exploring the state’s diverse attractions and natural beauty.

2 weeks agoFantastic place! The price was worth it. We used our military discount at the gate. It’s worth buying the full pass, it pays for itself just by seeing 1 attraction. However, I think the museum needs more to see.a month agoOur first time at Moody Gardens was incredible! We went during the week to avoid crowds and it definitely paid off. The different pyramids of exhibits are organized really well, our favorite was the rain forest! We got to see a sloth up close and stroll around looking at exotic birds and even walk with some! The aquarium part is so amazing, filled with knowledge about the gulf and the sea creatures that inhabit it.a week agoSuch an awesome spot for the family. Went to aquarium, which has an amazing layout to make it easy to see everything. Also went to rain forest, dinosaurs, and movie. Staff is excellent and super friendly.3 weeks agoGreat stop if you are looking for something to do in Galveston island. Different attractions to explore. I purchased the value pack. The highlight of the experience was the rainforest and 3D movie ???? Africa. A bit pricey. However, the area is taken care of. Friendly staff. I went on a weekday and the environment was easy to navigate. Worth going.a month agoWow, didn’t expect such a “big city” experience in the small town of Galveston!! We bought the $75 Value Pass and spent the day. Our favorite was the Rainforest Pyramid, followed closely by the Aquarium Pyramid. The three videos we watched were entertaining, and the boat cruise was slow and relaxing. Overall, a great way to spend the day!

Your journey to Bolivar Peninsula, TX, USA promises to be a fascinating and enriching experience, filled with cherished memories that will linger long after you’ve returned home.
Our perspective of the landmark pier.. kids enjoyed most of the rides, several were down with no discount. Hence the 4 stars. Great spot for sun set pics.
I came here for the first time tonight fully expecting a huge crowd, long lines, and rude people. We could not have been more wrong. We went on Friday evening an hour before dark. Expected long wait times for the rides, but there were no lines. Weather was good, breezy and 75 degrees. To our surprise, the pier was not remotely crowded, guests were mainly families. Staff was helpful, and only one ride was closed for maintenance. We did all the rides, had ice cream, and enjoyed the pier and view. There’s enough variety with the rides to satisfy kids, teens and adults. We were thinking we would be there the entire evening, but since it wasn’t crowded, we were able to ride several rides multiple times, get ice cream, play some games, and had done everything in 2 hours. Enjoyed it! My nine year old had a blast.
Some of the staff suck. Lazy as heck. Like when I bought my ticket the person shoved the braclets out and turned off her mic and ignored me pretending she couldn’t hear me when I tried to ask her something. Loser. Some of the rides had long lines. Like the Ferris wheel. And log ride. Note you can’t ride the Ferris wheel as a single rider. You must go with someone they told us. So my daughter couldn’t ride it. If you got a single child I suggest you buy a ride pass for yourself even if you get dizzy on rides. The single ride tickets are expensive ranging from $7.50 for extreme rides, $6.50 for family rides and $5.50 for kiddie rides. I’ve posted a pic. As for food and drinks you can buy a $10 refillable souvenir tumbler that’s $1 to refill. Pic of food menu attached too. Photo of you on the ride is $20. Expensive given price of ride bracelet.
I had so much fun here with my daughter! And the rides were scary! Great games. Clean arcade, restroom and rides. No lines for rides and food during the week. And the staff and security are super nice and funny ????????????????????
So fun! Great to get there as the sun was going down. The cool breeze really helped. It was fun to watch the rides, but we’re past the age where some of them are ‘fun’. The ferris wheel is more our style and that was amazing, especially at sunset. Made for great pictures. Be sure to go all the way to the end of the pier and see the pelicans and sit in the rocking chairs to relax. The breeze is stronger there too. Food is varied, but typically over-prices. It was $11 to get on the pier itself and each ride was $5.50 (kiddie rides), or $6.50 to $7.50 depending on the excitement level of the ride. Parking across the street is $10 and worth it for families or older folks who need an easy way to get to the pier.
